The Best Irish Album Ever

A lot of people haven't heard of it and it took it thirty four years to go gold, but in my opinion Van Morrison's Astral Weeks is the best pop music record ever to have been made by an Irishman/woman or group. Although most of the songs were written in Cambridge, Massachusetts and it was recorded in New York, this is an album all about growing up in 1950's Belfast. Nostalgia wafts from every groove as words and harmonies take us to a city of record shops, greasy cafes, bread vans, trains, shipyards and tight knit neighbourhoods filled with the craic. Using a group of session musicians who were given free rein to improvise over a song collection about Van Morrison's working class boyhood this unlikely ensemble (no one even knows who the flute player was) produced a masterpiece which won't be repeated in this era of synth musicians who are all manufactured in a lab somewhere in North Bergen, New Jersey. If you think Irish music lurks in the interface between Enya, U2 and the Clancy Brothers or - God save us - Westlife then you need a brand new Venn Diagram that includes The Waterboys, Snow Patrol and Belle and Sebastian (actually they're Scottish) who were all heavily influenced by Astral Weeks. Not convinced? Elvis Costello thinks its one of the greatest albums of all time as do Mojo Magazine, Q Magazine and Rolling Stone

The emotional highlight of Astral Weeks is Madame George. A 10 minute song about a West Belfast drag queen who runs a shabeen. The only free version I found was this one to the right. Van is not firing on all cylinders here (he's 60 something) but it gives you an idea. (I tried to get rid of the letters on the screen but the record company put them up there for some silly anti piracy reason. The eejits.)

oh and in case anyone thinks I've forgotten about Derry's finest contribution to the world, The Understones, here they are singing teenage kicks

Love Van Morrison. I haven't heard of this album before, but Moondance is one of my favorite albums of all time, so I know I should check this one out as well.

I dig Snow Patrol too, but I haven't heard too many of their songs aside from "Chasing Cars" (yeah, this cold, usually unemotional dude inexplicably turns into a sap at the oddest of times) and "Take Back the City."

Understones he says. The typo witch strikes again.

I dont think Teenage Kicks is their best song though, I've always liked Jimmy Jimmy better.

I urge you to download or buy the entire album, take some of your favourite light mood altering substance, kick back and listen.

Cypress Avenue is another standout track if you want to go the cheapie song at a time route.

Brian, sorry if this hurts your street cred, but you don't really come across as a cold, unemotional sort. Even if you are a lawyer.

I almost had that Van Morrison downloaded on dial-up, but a friend called and it was a call I had to take, so now I'm back to the beginning again. Drat.

I've known a couple of major Van Morrison fans, but even so, I haven't understood till now that he's not just from Ireland, he's from Belfast. Makes a difference. Not in the sense of better or worse, just in the sense of being more specific.

I like Astral Weeks,Waterboys (This is the sea/Fishermans blues/Room to roam) and the Undertones.
Other bands coming from your little neck of the woods I like:Stiff Little Fingers,That Petrol Emotion and Neil Hannon/Divine Comedy.

I think this is his most Belfast solo album but of course his work with Them! is very Belfast.

After that he went in different directions.

Incidentally Colin Bateman says over on Ger's site that VM rehearses in front of the room where he's trying to write his books. I forget exactly where he said that but its eomwhere on Brennan's posts from January.

That Petrol Emotion - the O'Neill brothers, yeah, excellent stuff.

Not such a big fan of SLF. Obviously Suspect Device and Alternative Ulster though. Great tracks.

Here's a link to the comments Adrian is referring to. Also mentioned is Paul Charles' (NI crime fiction writer) connection with Van the Man.

Cheers

Pretty good voice for sixty, though, I'd say. I enjoyed it. The funny thing, though, is that that Wikipedia article on the song makes it all less clear rather than more so. And I do have to tend to believe Morrison himself that he didn't really know what exactly he was talking about, rather than just buying Lester Bangs version. I even kind of like the Yeat's Georgie angle, or at least it adds to the allure of it all.

Val Doonican of course, who can forget the cardiganed hero on Saturday evenings, just after Dr. Who.

Thanks, I knew I wasnt hallucinating that but I couldnt figure out where I heard that.

The problem with Van's version is that he's told about three different stories about the song and he sincerely believes all of them.

I'll admit that the Wikipedia entry on Madame George isnt that clear, but I'm not totally sure I buy that Tom Nolan thing in the Wall Street Journal either. Still its nice to have a dicussion and hopefully more people will discover the album.

David Gray has sold ten times as many copies of his "homage" to Astral Weeks than Astral Weeks actually sold. And I do like David Gray but Van's Astral Weeks is better.

Thirty-four years is a long time to wait for your album to go gold, but it does attest to its durabilty.

I think if Van is murky on the song's origins, then murky it is likely to remain.

I have no idea who David Gray is, but for the homage to outsell the original seems very odd. You would think at the very least it would lead people back to the source.

OT, but I keep forgetting to ask how the German lager is coming along?

My buddy Nate and I bottled my red ale Thursday night. To celebrate, we went up the street to the brewery and closed it down for the night. The next day at work was brutal.

Total right off. We've had a week of 100F temperatures (one day it went up to 112F) and since I was brewin out in the garden shed where it probably got up to 150 I killed the whole batch.

I'm going to wait until Southern Hem Fall and try again.

On the upside I finally found a pub not too far from my house called The Local which has about eighteen craft beers on tap.

David Gray is pretty popular in the UK. I suppose his big hits were Babylong and Sailing By - kind of a James Blunt figure before James Blunt.

Sorry to hear about the lager, man. (Raises pint) To fallen comrades!

Good news about the pub. What's the legal limit in Australia? Not that you'd ever, of course.

Adrian,

I hadn't heard of Astral Weeks until today, but I downloaded it based on your recommendation. Figured I couldn't go wrong with your taste in music--The Dead Yard had me listening to OK Computer for a month straight.

I haven't listened to a ton of Van Morrison in the past (I'm 27 so I guess he was before my time), but Glen Hansard (from Dublin) plays an amazing Morrison cover. He received a standing-O last time I saw him play a Morrison song live.

As for Irish musicians, there's just something great about many of today's Irish singer-songwriters: Damien Rice, Glen Hansard, Lisa Hannigan, and David Gray (yes Dave's from England, but he sells a ton of records in Ireland).

For some great American singer-song writers, try Joshua James or Griffin House. Great albums from both of them.

I was pretty bummed out and half of me wanted to let the batch keep brewing just to see what happened, but the better angels of my nature knew that it was a goner, so I threw it out. I'll start again just with the bock.

If you ever get a chance to see Radiohead live its worth it. I saw them at Red Rocks and in their home town of Oxford. Both gigs were aweseome. And they managed to turn an album I dont much care for Kid A into a great listening experience.

I'm partial to the first two House of Pain records myself.

Yup, I agree with that, but I think we gotta impose strict geographical boundaries here.
