Yours truly, the second sexiest Irish crime writer, will be reading in Sydney tomorrow Tuesday September 1 at 7pm at the Mosman Art Gallery on Myahgah Rd. phone (02) 9978 4178. Contact: Jon Page. I'll be appearing with the far more sensible and crowd pully: Barry Maitland, Kathryn Fox and Robert Wilson. And to be honest I'm not feeling that sexy at the moment (an admission you will never hear from Justin Timberlake). I've just got back from Queensland and the humidity has done amazing things to my hair. I now look like Sideshow Bob on a very off day, but if you want to hear me read Fifty Grand or talk about Cuba or just gape in wonder at a 70's fro, I'll see ya there.

Your sense of humor is a killer.
Looking forward to a reading in Seattle, WA some day.
Holden
Nice seguey. Sideshow Bob's is voiced by which famous Seattle Psychiatrist?
Never made it to The Emerald City alas although if its pretty as Vancouver I'm sold.
In a no-holds-barred smack-down between Sideshow Bob and Stewie Griffin, I'm backing Stewie every time.
Enjoy the gig, squire ... Is that the Robert Wilson of Javier Falcon fame? If so, he's a terrific writer.
Cheers, Dec
Kelsey Grammer.
Never too late to make an Emerald City stop. Sister city to Galway, Ireland. Also to TashKent, Uzebekistan. ;->
Post a pic of the hair--somebody.
Dec
It is indeed I believe. I like Stewie and I think his finest hour was during the Star Wars episode.
Should be a fun wee event.
Holden
Yeah I'd love to go. I plan to do the Portland-Seattle drive at some point. I read an interesting travel book too about the inshore passage from Seattle to Anchorage which sounds good if I ever get a boat/learn to sail.
Seana
No pics. I'll make it like a Thomas Pynchon gig.
I don't care if Kelsey Grammer goes on to play Hamlet with the RSC. He shall never top his towering achievement as Sideshow Bob.

Very nice spotting on the pic. I wont comment on Tunisia. We have disagreed in the past.
I wish Fox wouldnt ruthlessly attack anyway on YouTube uploading Simpsons episodes. I'd love to link to Bob/Grammar singing Pinafore but cant.
Nah, we didn't disagree, really. It was simply likely that a few more souvenir sellers had moaterialized in Sidi Bou Said since you had been there. An old house I visited there would be a lovely, cool refuge on a hot day.

What would be wrong with looking like a Thomas Pynchon event? I'm sure we'd like to get him.
Ever read Palahniuk's Fugitives & Refugees? It's full of interesting non fiction about Portland, OR and its ghosts and legends and eccentricities.
Haven't read Palahniuk's Fugitives & Refugees, but will put it on my "To Read" list. I like Palahniuk.
I think Seattle is a beautiful city, but this is coming from someone who was born and raised in El Paso, Texas (or "born and bred" as we Texans say).
What does one call a person from El Paso? El Pasan? El Passive?

October 2010, Bouchercon is in San Fransisco. Let's meet up in Seattle and drive down.
John, do you ever drive up to conventions with Irish writers?

Hey Peter, when they have a convention in Thunder Bay, I'll drive up.
Will you be at Bouchercon in San Fran?
A person from El Paso is an El Pisso-in. Just kidding. We call each other El Pasoans.
Do you know the town? As in, "Down in the west Texas town of El Paso..." That song put us on the map, that and Old El Paso Chunky Salsa.
John, you still have a few hours.

Nope, you missed it. And I haven't planned that far ahead, but I'd certainly like to go to San Francisco. If I do, I'll be sure to where some flowers in my tangled, thinning hair.
My first college roommate was from El Paso. I called him ... Ricardo.

I read it! I like his non fiction better than his fiction I think and I like his fiction.
Lots of Ursula Le Guin tales set in an around Portland too, esp the great Lathe of Heaven. And we mustnt forget Gus Van Sandt.
Holden
I've always pitied residents of El Paso. After your bank got robbed in For a Few Dollars More I've wondered how difficult it must be to conduct any kind of business. Still at least the hotel landladies are unusually accommodating.
John
I'm down with that Bouchercon SF sounds great. Seattle to SF via Portland would be one of the great trips. In fact I think its one of the trips they took in Tom Wolfe's Electric Kool Aid Acid Test.
Peter
Why dont you come. You're even going to Bouchercon Indianapolis (for your sins)so why not SF too. We'll try and persuade Dec and Stuart Neville too.
Seana
And of course the whole thing will have to terminate in Santa Cruz. Or Monterey where I'll finally do my John Steinbeck pilgrimage.
Peter
Flowers in your hair is so last century. Flowers in your beard mate....

Adrian, I'd like to come. I'm moderating a panel this time; who knows? Maybe I could moderate a panel on Irish criem writing in SF. Hmm, I do know Eddie Muller, who's running Bouchercon 2010 ...

There are many reasons to pity poor El Paso. Have you seen the get-up waitresses wear at an El Paso drive-in hamburger joint during "The Get Away" with Steve McQueen? It's embarrassing.
Or have you seen how lovely El Paso looks in "No Country for Old Men" or "Kill Bill?" If they need a town to look butt-ugly in a movie, they go to El Paso.
Peter
That would be great if you had an actual job to do so we could get you completely shitfaced and incapable before hand.
Holden
But the landscape around El Paso was nice in No Country wasn't it?
Of course the El Paso in the Dollars was really Alameria in Granada, Spain.
I liked the Gettaway. Good Jim Thompson novel, pretty good movie (Ali McGraw was smoking hot). Did you ever listen to the Robert Evans memoir The Kid Stays in the Picture (I say listen because the audibook is genius) - there's a whole bit about the filming of the Gettaway. Its good.
Planning a Denver trip any time in the near future?
Liam
If only. I've got a hankering for some Illegal Pete's Big Potato burrito.
While some of mildewing stuff hides out in a storage locker just off the I-95, Denver though will always be close to my heart.

I drank with Stuart and Declan and Declan Hughes and John Connolly and Ruth Dudley Edwards in Dun Laoghaire. I sat atop a refrigerator and drank champagne toasts with Ken Bruen and others in Philadelphia.
I survived. I am unsinkable.

oooh I like that, a challenge...
remember that drinking scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark? I'll be Karen Allen.
Well, best of luck on your reading in Sydney. Knock 'em dead.
Well as that other band from Athens, Georgia THE DRIVE BY TRUCKERS say "It's time to shut up and get my ass on the plane."
Maybe talk to y'all from Sydney.
I'm not really anonymous, I'm Seana but my compute keeps telling me that there are errors in the form if I log in as myself. Once again, I seem to have a case of mistaken identity.
Well, I certainly would like to see any and all of you who make it down to my neck of the woods, though post-Kesey style road trip and post-Bouchercon makes me wonder how much there would really be left to see.
And Liam, I don't think you should wait for Adrian to come to Denver. You should be at Bouchercon SF yourself. Strut your stuff. Get some face time with this crowd. It sounds to be a rare, if somewhat Dyonisiac, occasion.
Any lurkers who are at this Sydney gig, please post your observations. Inquiring minds want to know.
Seana, or Sara or anonymous or whoever you are:
Sure, these crime events can Dionysian, but they have their Apollonian moments, too.

Hey--I'm back!
Oh, I'm sure they have an Apollonian side.
I think that we all must just hope that my temporary inability to fix my identity is not because I am one of the bacchante. Because, for those who don't know Euripides play, that means that someone is going to get torn limb from limb.
'F5! G5!'
Chords with exclamation marks! I like it. Though I'd be in danger of breaking strings if I tried to batter my wee acoustic with the kind of vigour that punctuation suggests.
gb
Adrian spoke very well and his hair wasn't THAT crazy.
He was the last one to leave too...
Suzie
Yes I think it went quite well. No one commented on the hair, alas, didnt seem fair though at the other two male readers were follicly challenged.
Peter
I dont see you taking up the challenge though.
Ger
Well you know F5 is very tricky, why not just play a barred F instead? He insists on F5, I dont get it. There's a bit in Visions of Johanna where he makes you play A5 but here it's too contrast it with A, here I think its just showing off.
"Peter
"I dont see you taking up the challenge though. "
I would never say "You're on, pal!" to man who has drunk his way through Carrickfergus in a single day.

Thank you for the report, anonymous, who is not me. I've never been to Sydney. And as far as I know, neither has Suzie.
Last to leave--so was alcohol being served, then?
Also, I must just say that those chord exclamation points are probably the most hilarious exclamation points I have ever seen.
Anon, Suzie,
Yes I was the last to leave. And yes alcohol was being served but I prefer to think that it was scintillating personality that kept me there rather than lingering because of the free hooch. Others are probably in a better position to judge.
Whose scintillating personality?
I meant who's.
Suzie,
Sorry my scintillating personality. And hey maybe I didnt sell as many books as the other authors but like the USMC I was the last man out.
Coincidentally, I was directed by Peter's blog to check out a contest on Craig Sisterson's Crime Watch, and happened down upon a post about a radio interview you must have just done. I don't think it's up yet, but if folks are interested in judging for themselves how scintillating you are, they should check out New Zealand Radio to see if they get the September 2nd program schedule on line in the next couple of days. It doesn't seem to be up quite yet.
The listing calls you McGinty, but I'm pretty sure it's the same guy. The McGinty chap was set to discuss Fifty Grand, at any rate.

Does it really say McGinty? Because that's just wrong.
Understandable, but wrong.
