Postcards From The Edge

My little brother Gareth emailed me back some pics from Afghanistan. He's the balding chap in the second one and that fuzzy one at the end is his charming accomodation. Every guest bed should come with an SA-80 assault rifle on the pillow, don't you think?

I like his wheels!

Hope Gareth comes home safe and soon.

I second Michael's hopes.

This balding thing is, as usual, overstated. We now know that you only wish you could keep your hair looking so tidy.

He is looking very serene as he stands next to that awfully big tank, isn't he?

Mike

Yeah me too. And at least the weather out there is a good bit better now.

Corey

Thanks man.

Yeah I was just teasing him - a bit.

Boys and their tanks eh? I'm sure Dr Freud has an explanation.

seana said...

And I'm sure he loves that kind of joke just like all little brothers do.

As to boys and their toys--well, you said it, not me. But you won't hear me dissing anybody on active duty in this war.

Of course, I live in Santa Cruz, so I will share today's headline story in our local paper. What's the most popular gym class at Santa Cruz High? You probably don't even have to read the link.

seana said...

Not sure if that link worked, so here it is again.

Yeah, an SA-80 beats a mint every time. I hope your brother makes it back with few interesting tales.

I did that Bikram yoga once. I thought I was going to have a heart attack.

Lots of interesting stories already. None of them, alas, are for the blog. I'm hoping that - if and when he makes it home in once piece, touch wood, he'll think about writing a book. This is his third war after all.

Your brother is a brave soul and I deeply appreciate his sacrifice.

THIRD war? Holy mackeral. He seems way, WAY too young.

adrian mckinty said...

Holden

Well lets hope a literal sacrifice itself isnt required eh?

I wouldnt go mainly because of the bed situation. I couldnt sleep on a bed like to save my life. And with a bunch of strangers right next to me? No chance.

That first pic, is it Sydney?

Its funny, I was just reading about that. Giant Sandstorm Reds Out Sydney. We're not getting it in Melbourne although when you get a strong northerly wind in the summer sometimes it can get pretty intense.

I spent a month in Cairo once and holy crap that was intense. I happened to time my visit with the coming of the annual Khamseen when the whole of the Sahara decides that it would very much like to visit Cairo for a while.

He looks nice!

THIRD War? No rest for the weary, I guess. Time for that boy to come home.

HoldenCaufield said...

No, no, no, I didn't mean literal sacrifice. God, I didn't mean to imply that at all. I meant he's doing something that's quite selfless. He's relinquishing a slacker's life (like mine) for what he considers the greater good.

Yep, hope for a safe return for all those folks. I've had a couple of friends do tours in Afghanistan with the Canadian forces, both came back safe thankfully. I just bought a book by a Canadian ER doc who did a tour at an FoB in Afghanistan, a good read by all accounts.

here's to safe travels and adequate body armor all around!

Miss Witch

Definitely thinning on top.

adrian mckinty said...

Holden

Hopefully he'll keep out of harms ways and not volunteer for anything.

adrian mckinty said...

Matt

Its the IED's that worry me. A frighteningly high number of casualties seem to come from those.

adrian mckinty said...

HB

Good body armour and good luck - thats a good vibe.

My favorite part of that yoga article was how the kids at the end of the session gave the rowdy freshmen the evil eye for interrupting them while they were in corpse pose.

Matt said...

Yeah Adrian, from the combat deaths the Canadian forces have suffered, or deaths caused by enemy activity anyhow, the majority have come from IEDs, no question.

I think you can tell from your following here your brother would have a built-in audience for his book, when he writes it. The other McKinty.

When I try yoga, I fall asleep or my legs cramp up. I once went to a class with a girl I was keen to get to know, but by the end I decided it wasn't worth it.

my wife's off to bikram on Sunday. I dont know how she compes with it.

I think he could write a nice little book comparing the three theatres and his experiences. Unfortunately he's in intelligence and signed the Official Secrets Act so a lot of the stuff he's involved with he wouldnt be allowed to ever talk about.

adrian mckinty said...

Miss Witch

Yes, but I have to be able to tease him about something.

seana said...

My family divides right down the middle on flexible vs. inflexible, physically speaking. I got the bum gene, I guess, because even when I was a little kid I couldn't touch my toes without bending my knees. So I just try to do the spiritual yoga.

No--I'm too inflexible even for that. I'm surprised I haven't been run out of Santa Cruz. Maybe that's still ahead.
