Shatner & Nimoy at Dragoncon

Two old, funny Jewish guys having a laugh with each other in Atlanta. Trust me, this is pretty good. (Look for Nimoy going for Shatner's wig near the start.) You can watch the whole hour on WhatJaneSays's channel on YouTube.

"They called me a dickhead?"

LOL!

I loved this.

The opposite of hubris, for any of you who might be in the way of succumbing to its temptations at some point.

I am so happy that they have such a rapport.

Yeah the dickhead stuff was pretty funny.

(hey Sean and Seana)

They seem to really like one another dont they? I saw Nimoy speak once but clearly they're a double act and need to be together.

seana said...

Yeah, they're a duo, all right. For some reason, George Burns and Gracie Allen popped into my mind as I watched them. Not sure exactly why, except maybe just that they were having so much fun together.

Oh, and welcome, Sean. I suppose I could always go by Susie if it gets too confusing.

Though I'd really rather not.

Oh, he's still just as good looking! LN, I mean.

They didn't seem to mention Galaxy Quest.

Galaxy Quest is an underrated classic. Tony Shaloub! Sigourney! Sam Rockwell!

Burns and Allen, yes I see it, or The Smothers Brothers. Thats why I think the original Trek ages better than Next Generation too, the central performances are just so great that the wobbly sets and dodgy plots dont seem to matter.

Adrian,

Good call on that. The original crew had much better chemistry than the Next Gen crew. Matter of fact, I liked the chemistry of the "new old" crew from Trek '09 more than that of Next Gen.

seana said...

Yes, the Smothers Brothers. I wonder if it's partly that that cast must have always taken a sort of ironic view of the whole Star Trek venture, while newer casts have somehow persuaded themselves that it's all serious.

I loved Galaxy Quest. It's a perfect blend of parody and a real story where you care about what happens. My favorite character was Mathesar, who was played by Enrico Colantoni.

I know that, because I just Googled it, and since you don't get the Google artwork we do, Adrian, today it has a UFO in the process of abducting the second o. Apparently this is because searches about unexplained phenomenon are currently the number 1 and the number six searches.

Yikes.

yeah they worked well together. Esp Kirk and Spock. McCoy too. That was genius casting. I also would have liked more of Scotty, but I suppose there was only so much they could do.

Seana

No we didnt get that Google page unfortunately.

I think that may have been the last film I really liked with Sigourney Weaver in it.

You forgot Alan Rickman!

adrian mckinty said...

Miss Witch

Of course. That dynamic between him and Tim Allen was priceless. Actually now that I think about it Galaxy Quest is a bit of a comedy classic isnt it?

Have to agree with Seana and Adrian, Galaxy Quest is an underappreciated gem.

"By Grabthor's hammer, I will avenge you."

Pure gold.

IF only they had made some money with it we might have had a sequel we actually wanted to see.

seana said...

I'm surprised they haven't made money with it in the long run, as it is kind of a cult classic by now. But maybe these things never completely pay off that way?

Seana

Although it did launch Sam Rockwell's career so that was good.

I was at DragonCon that Friday and was very excited to see these icons in person. I watched the reruns of ST with my dad growing up, and though I can't say I don a Trek uniform for the convention, I have been known to throw out a "live long and prosper".

For Shatner, as pompass as he is, you can't deny his prescence in a room and their banter was fun to see. Also, I figured it was the only chance I'd get to see these two fellas together in my lifetime. Nimoy seems so genuine - and Shatner was shameless. It was super cool. And who knew Shatner wrote 28 books and counting...I guess perhaps I'm not a "true" fan since I haven't read any of them ;)

Gosh I'm jealous I think that event must have been really something. It was LOL funny.

As to the books Shatner "wrote"... Listen I was at Simon and Schuster for five years who publish the Star Trek books and I was always pestering the people down in the ST division to "help" write a Shatner Trek book. Alas it never came to anything, but I think you catch my drift here.

seana said...

I think it's pretty common knowledge that Shatner got a little help. And I think knowing this, you can see the qualification in his face when you watch him recite the number.

What actually impressed me was how canny both these old troopers actually are. I think before I saw this, I thought that Shatner "was" full of himself, but I think he may be a little too self-aware to really be accused of hubris. He's actually a brilliant comic in my opinion. Strange to say, but he may have actually missed his calling.
