Leah's New Book

My better half's new book. Out this summer from Purdue University Press. I've read it and I really liked it. It's a look at the complex history of Wagner's opera Tannhauser and its surprising cultural ramifications. You can read more about it, here.
...
The cover is from one of Aubrey Beardsley's series of art works on Tannhauser which was my sole contribution to the volume, although I liked his amazing portrait of Venus slightly better.

Congratulations to her. It looks very interesting, though I have to admit that though I've seen The Ring Cycle and the Flying Dutchman, I haven't seen Tannhauser.

It isnt as well known as some of the other biggies, but oh boy that overture...

Congrats to Leah! You must be proud of her. So cool that both of you have new works out there.

Yeah, I like the Venusberg song ... a rousing, Teutonic drinking tune.

Mazel tov, though I don't know if Wagner would have appreciated the language.

By the way, considering the choice the opera's protagonist must make, do you think Wagner could have called the opera "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes"?

I will say that if hadn't been told otherwise, I would have suspected that the title was your idea.

You guys have been together for a long time, haven't you?

Hmm, I hadn't noticed the title. She could write a follow-up study on the views of Wagner and his more notorious followers and call it "A Day at the Races."

Congratulations to Leah. Those are surprising cultural ramifications. I always imagined that Wagner and the Jewish community would have had little to do with each other.
So you've been pipped by a couple of months. March, isn't it, for you? Is The Age doing anything on it? If not, how would you feel about an extract running in the Sunday Herald Sun? 1.6 million readers etc etc.

thank you. Yeah it is pretty cool. Sometimes her stuff is a bit over my head but this one I could follow and enjoy.

Initially yes, they do, (although in Beardsley's portrait she's a brunette!) but of course duty the Volk, blah blah blah etc...

Not sure who thought of the title. I cant claim credit because I dont remember.

Ahh the Marx brothers and Wagner - the perfect combination I think.

Yeah pretty strange pathways huh?

I dont know when the Australian pub date is but of course I'd do anything for the Herald, look what they did for Peter Temple for heavens sake!

Ive only heard Wagner in Morse, but I might like him if i had a good listen. It must feel great after so much work to finally see it published. Will there be celebrations?

Congratulations to her. Both of you coming out with books one after the other, how fun.

There might be a cocktail or two when we finally get that George McFly moment for Leah's book.

Thanks for that.
