The Least Phoney Films Up For This Year's Oscars

By strange luck and a lot of aeroplane rides I have seen all ten films up for Best Picture Oscar this year. I certainly haven't reviewed all of them and I don't want to do that now. Instead in the best/worst traditions of this blog I've made a list. A pretty stupid list. I can't really explain what I mean here at all, but like Justice Potter Stewart's definition of pornography I just sort of know phoney when I encounter it. Oscar Wilde called sentimentality unearned emotion and that plays a part in what I'm talking about as does a cynical manipulation of the audience by the screenwriters and the director. Of course Hollywood is all about the art of fakery and as somebody once said if you can fake sincerity you've got it made. So yeah, there's that and yes I do appreciate that some of these are true stories. (And I also appreciate that this way of thinking is what made Mark David Chapman such an asshole.)  But anyway here's my list from most phoney to least phoney:

10. “Black Swan”
9. “Inception”
8. “The Kids Are All Right”
7. “The King's Speech”
6. “The Social Network”
5. “Toy Story 3”
4. “True Grit”
3. “127 Hours”
2. “The Fighter”
1. “Winter's Bone"
