Looking at all the stout and dark beers such as Rochefort on your list Adrian I' m inclined to think that you might be Irish !
Westvleteren is a rare bird given that the monks only brew sufficient batches to meet their needs so I' m jealous if you have an underground supply.
On the recommendation front , give Witkap Stimulo a try ,it's a unique take on a pale ale that only the Belgians could brew. Rodenbach Grand Cru is a classic red Flemish ale with an acetic edge but unique taste , like "The Wire" you either love it or you've never tried it !
I belong to a Belgian beer club and each year we hit different parts of Belgium for a 4 day booze up . Coupled with the quirky nature of Belgian culture for us it' s a trip planned with the precision of the Normandy landings although there is a downside , we have to navigate through Northern France to get there

Getting Westy in Australia is no mean task. And pricey. Not only do I have to pay my guy but then he has to FedEx the stuff. Its almost not worth it. Almost.

I have never had Rodenbach but it sounds intriguing. I'll definitely give it a go.

Adrian , be sure to go for the " Grand Cru" the basic Rodenbach is good but not as distinctive ! I can well imagine the price of Westvleteren in Oz we checked a beer cafe in Antwerp called Kulminator and aged bottles were going at 100 euros and more.As a final note another beer worth finding is called Guldenberg , a complex golden ale and at 8.5 % alc remarkably drinkable and a great session beer.

You guys are on another level of appreciation of beer than I am, but I'll just add that I like a lot of the Deschutes Brewery Ale out of Bend, Oregon and in fact are drinking their very quaffable Green Lakes Organic Ale right this very minute.

I didnt know that Westy aged well. I suppose that makes sense. Next time I'll have to keep one for a year and see.

A very good choice it seems. A respectable score of 86 on Beer Advocate.

It may be accurate but it was disheartening to see so many people drinking Budweiser, Coors Lite, Old Milwaukee and Schlitz in The Art of Fielding.

Verisimilitude is all.

I recommended The Art of Fielding to my baseball loving Joycean blogfriend PQ on the basis of your review, so I do hope its good.

If she'd been a baseball loving Melvillean it would have been perfect for her.

Ha! So it's beer you be liking eh? Though I have cut down my consumption of the stuff (I'm sure much to the dismay of Plutarch, who likened it to the finest of all foodstuffs), my appreciation of its flavours and nuances has increased.
Now that is a fine list which I'm familiar with a couple, but not others, so I think I will be needing to try a few....good man!
I do like the dark stuff, in particular Sam Smiths OS, but may I add that if you are fond of a pilsener I would try Doctors Orders 'Iron Lung'? Very good stuff that sticks to the sides as it goes down.
Great list of essential items for survival!

Well its hardly the time for Pilsner at the moment but when summer rolls around I'll give it a shot.

Damnation 23 looks like it packs a good punch.

Hi Adrian,

Great choices. Love that London Porter! Have you tried Old Rasputin Imperial Stout? Absolutely the best!

Cheers, Ben
