The Burma Chronicles
A nice Christmas gift I got this year was the Burma Chronicles by Guy DeLisle about a guy married to a Medecins Sans Frontiers doctor who gets shipped out to Burma. He's a Canadian comic book animator and artist and the book covers the fascinating year he spent in Rangoon living under the Junta. Its a book I would never have considered getting for myself but I'm very glad I read it. It gets under the skin of a country that none of us really know anything about. Before this the last thing I read about Burma was George Orwell and that was somewhat out of date. However, if you haven't read Orwell's classic "Shooting an Elephant" you should and you can do so here.

It's a good read, Adrian. You might also want to check out Pyongyang, about his time in North Korea, and which I believe he wrote while working in Somalia or Ethiopia (he must go through passports pretty quickly).
He also wrote a book about his time in China, Shenzhen, but it's not up there with Pyonyang or the Burma Chronicles.
That "Shooting an Elephant" was an excellent essay. My dad was a big fan of Orwell's nonfiction writings and now I see why.
Emma Larkin has been writing about contemporary Burma as well, In fact, her first book is called Finding George Orwell in Burma. She has also written one which for some unknown reason we never got in called Everything is Broken, about the aftermath of Cyclone Nargis there. She's been sneaking in and out of the country for some time. I've only glanced at the first book, but have the feeling that I need to get back to it, and the Guy DeLisle as well.

Yes, I'll definitely check out the North Korea one. In fact I'll order it from the library right now.

Yes he's really great. Inside The Whale is maybe my favourite.
I'll check it out.
