I was a bit depressed when I learned that Guillermo Del Toro was leaving The Hobbit movie and I was even more depressed when - before filming began - Peter Jackson demanded that New Zealand change its labour laws so that the unions would be weakened; but I guess I'm a nerdy fanboy at heart because I'm really looking forward to this:

The bad news is Bloom is back; the good news is they apparently are going to show the White Council razing Dol Guldur, which should be pretty epic.
Me too!!!
Matt
I've heard that they've cast Sylvester McCoy as Radagast (for the Dol Guldur attack presumably) which will be a nice cross over into the Who universe. Christopher Lee of course takes us into the Star Wars universe, the Hammer universe, the Bond universe etc. etc. and of course Lee actually met Tolkien.
Mike
Its looking pretty cool aint it?
Very savvy marketing strategy on Mr. Jackson's part, I think.
Didn't take much to overcome your resistance, did it?
Seana
Yeah all it took was one shot of a bunch of sword fighting in one video blog for me to get off my high-horse.
I'm still a little worried about the 3D but if there's a 2D version opening the same night I'll be the first in line.
I have to admit that he does seem rather charming, albeit in a geeky sort of way.
I think, and hope, that Martin Freeman will be inspired casting.
Seana
I think you have to be either a tyrant or a charmer to be a successful director.
David
Yeah I like him. He's getting all the iconic roles now: Arthur Dent, Dr Watson, Bilbo Baggins...
I love Martin Freeman.
Thanks for giving me a way into Hobbit anticipation.
Here's a piece of ultra-geeky LOTR trivia:
Q: Which LOTR actor can be seen reading the single volume edition of LOTR in a 1970s movie?
A: Christopher Lee can be glimpsed reading it The House That Dripped Blood, a film that also had one of the Dr. Who's, Jon Pertwee.
My Lotro kinship used this question for a giveaway:
Who was the last non-elf on record to be allowed to enter the Undying Lands?
Seana
He's a very good moral centre.
Cary
You've got to love Christopher Lee's IMDB entry. The thing begins in 1948 and never stops...
Matt
Sam Gamgee, the last of the ring beaarer?
Close, Adrian! Time to brush up on your LOTR appendices. The very end of the story.
I'm reminded that the last thing Bill Hicks did the day he passed away was read The Fellowship of the Ring...
Matt
Its got to be Gimli then, he's invited because of his close friendship with Legolas (something I never really believed in the movie).
I just cannot get through any of the books. I've tried the Lord of the Rings but that bloody birthday party goes on longer than some entire novels and I've never got past it.
In other geek news, and related to an earlier blog, Sky1 in the UK are filming Good Omens. Terry Jones (Python) is adapting it. Sky1 seem to have cornered the market in Pratchett adaptations and have been quite good so far.
I ran a signing for Terry Jones once. He was very shy, very lovely and told me that he and his wife were very active swingers.
Rob
I'm going to have to totally disavow that last bit because of the UK's insane libel laws. As far as I know Terry Jones is happily married and is faithful to his wife...
I too met Jones at some thing at UCL a long time ago. Nice bloke, needed a haircut. He seems to have given up directing but I like the history programmes he does from time to time.
If you really want to tax your patience dont read LOTR but try the Silmarillion instead.
Rob, I'm wondering with what intention he happened to mention this.
I think as an American, I'm safe in asking this. You may not be, but if so, you're over the line anyway, so do tell.
There was a documentary series on UK television at the time about life behind the net curtains in suburbia. The most recent had been about swingers and we were chatting about it in the tea room when he piped up with the bombshell.
Good save, Rob. I'm a little disappointed that they weren't asking you to join them. But I'll buy it.
For now.
so, i really really really think you're an amazing writer and i like you even more now that its apparent that youre nerdy!
