A sad day. We were a big Columbo following household growing up. Judging by the BBC piece, I'm sure Falk knew that he'd landed the role of a lifetime and I think that's a heaven in itself for actors.

I liked the bit about the coat and the Smithsonian. Seems Mr. Falk did not succumb to hubris.

I was a huge Columbo fan. Huge. Loved all the Patrick McGoohan episodes. The Johnny Cash episode. The Janet Leigh episode. Even the rebooted ones from the 80s and 90s were pretty good.

I was really jealous of Colin Bateman when he told me that he spent a night drinking with Peter Falk and talking with him all about Columbo.

My youngest sister's first crush in middle school was on a kid who reminded her of Peter Falk.

They rebroadcast most of them again a few years ago, and I have to say they held up pretty well.

Thanks for this. COLUMBO was seminal, and Falk was perfectly cast. He did a lot of great work, but he'll always be Lt. Columbo, and I suspect he was all right with that.

It was I think the perfect blend of great casting, great writing and great directing.

I agree. He made that character. I just hope that they never do to Peter Falk what they did to Peter Sellars's Inspector Clusoe.

I loved Columbo in my youth, in part because I identified with his wardrobe choices.

Inevitably, I call your attention once again to this photo of me, Dave Torrans, and Columbo (sort of).

Peter

I liked his car. And his dog.

Peter, it's like he's your guardian angel or something.

I wonder if visitors to the shop are pausing for a moment of contemplation or, heaven forbid, placing impromptu shrines.

seana said...

As to the shrines, it probably depends on what kind of individual Mr. Torrans is.

Peter Rozovsky said...

Or his customers. I think he's too sensible for the maudlin sorts of tributes that newspaper seem to think are newsworthy when anyone dies. Maybe everyone in the shop will wear trench coats for a weeklong mourning period.

Now that would be cool.

Columbo was a great show, and Peter Falk was Columbo. That is a given.

He was a national treasure.

Peter Falk will be missed.
