Hopefully I made it to Perth and I'm now at the writers festival. Either that or my plane crashed in the outback and I'm now in some sort of Mad Max 2 type scenario battling for my life against a bunch of petrol heads in goggles. Or I could be in a Mad Max 3 scenario battling for my life against Tina Turner's hair extensions....
Just a quick reminder that if you want to come see me then I'll be at three events over the next two days. (Details on the post three below this one).
...
Slainte.

In case you didn't know it yet, you made it.
In response to Adrian's comment in posting before this one: Flight attendants in the US are all starting to look like like Aunt Bea from Andy Griffin -- not that there's anything wrong with that. ;->

Yeah!!!

There's something about Air Thailand flight attendants...
I dont know that I'd want to rely on them in a crisis but man are they easy on the eyes.

I'm at a little internet cafe in Perth. Sitting next to me is Irvine Welsh, writer of Trainspotting, I'm not going to introduce myself but I cant help but notice that he is reading the Scottish football results which is such a cliche....
He came to our store when his novel Crime came out. Seemed like a nice enough guy, although I didn't introduce myself either. Certainly you would have alot more reason to, though. I think he might appreciate those Thai flight attendants.

The only weird thing was that Welsh was wearing a White Sox t shirt which seemed odd to me.
Anyway I just had my reading with him and it turns out he nows lives in Chicago and is a huge White Sox fan. We had a long talk about the joys of baseball.
Baseball is the transcendent activity, isn't it? Too bad that leaves me out of world harmony.
I thought you had posted about being in the same panel or something. Figured it would probably work out. If I had known he was also in exile and liked baseball I would have bet on it.

Yeah Welsh was a good guy. In fact I was lucky that everyone I panelled with and met were really great.
I'll maybe blog later in the week about it, but I gone on particularly well with Lenny Bartulin, Irvine Welsh, Mike Koryta and Michael Goldfarb - all of whom were really smart funny guys.
BTW thank you to the person who rec'd that I go out to the Little Cretaures Brewery in Freemantle. I had fantastic beer, a great meal and afterwards I walked to the beach watched the sun set over the Indian Ocean while the MS Queen Victoria steamed out into the sunset.
If you thought those guys were smart and funny, those panels must have been really entertaining. I don't know why I don't have much memory of Irvine Welch's visit. I remember his reading from the book, and some reference to people finding his accent hard to understand and of course there was some allusion to Trainspotting, but the rest is a blank.
I finished Third Policeman yesterday. I thought it was good all the way through, but then in the end I thought it was brilliant.
It makes me very sad that all it seems to have brought him was shame. Especially as they post his letter to his friend at the end where he's so high after just having finished it. All downhill from there, I guess.
Seana
Yes its very sad that he never lived to see that book bring so much delight to so many people and had to hide it away and pretend it didnt exist.
